Everyone who wants to has probably seen the casting spoiler for Series Four (30) of Doctor Who by now; if not, here. I've been thinking, and... )

Also, final of Heroes tonight and I am entirely unspoiled. Yes. And Torchwood is jolly good on the second viewing. But, I got taken to a Burt Bacharach concert for a corporate thing, Monday night. Still in shock. Sugar. Cloying. Pain.

Doctor Who!!!!!! )

Torchwood is starting on Aust. TV tonight. So, hurrah, although if the fricking publicity goes on about Gwen/Jack and how they'll end up together, one more time, I'll scream.

Doctor Who
Huh, I got a comment published in SFX ... on the whole I'd rather they hadn't used that one (with really lousy punctuation and from a reply to someone, while not expecting to be quoted) but otoh I got published in SFX asking for more Jack/Ianto in Torchwood, so it's all good ... I think. I just reread that, and wow, talking of bizarre punctuation... I've caught the dread disease, ellipsisitis. No cure, I'm afraid...

I'm falling deeper in love with Heroes (up to 1.13 so far) and Doctor Who is back on track, mostly, but I'm not feeling fannish about anything, which may be a function of lack of time. (We're busier than ever).

SGA's getting mixed reactions lately, but I've always loved it. I guess if you're watching it with the hope of logical plots and original storylines, you might find it frustrating, but I just want the characters.

In fact, I love the characters of SGA, and that just makes the plot an optional extra for me. I love John's bizarre delayed reactions and little quirks and his not-quite compos behaviour. I love Rodney's bluster and his occasional vulnerabilities, and Teyla's warrior-maiden stoicism, with the little hints of a sense of humour behind it. And Ronon's, oh just Ronon, with his surfer-boy looks and much-improved talking ability when food is in the offing. (*proof-reads* And apparently I love hyphens... Er, quite.) But mostly it's the way they actually feel like people, despite the fact the writers couldn't write women if one came up and bashed them on the head (and I wish one would, sometimes). I mean hell, I'd watch the SGA peeps if they were ordering pizza in, and watching a movie; actually I think I've read that fanfic. Oh, all right, and it's mainly the John & Rodney show for me. Tap dance, boys, tap dance! */random*

Old news, probably, but my inner grammar geek meant to post this a week ago - to be precise, my schadenfreudey inner grammar geek: Misplaced Comma Costs Millions. Yes, old news. This is why we need a direct brain to livejournal interface. They should start working on it right now. It would be a great boon to those of us who are lazier than a sloth who's been living on Easy Street all its life and is now a businesssloth being given a twenty million dollar golden handshake for incompetence too busy, er yes that's it.

ETA: Oh dear, you know you've been watching/reading way too much SGA when you see an e-mail address "mre_..." and you automatically translate as "Meals Ready To-Eat" before realising they stand for her initials. *face-palm*
13th-Jun-2006 01:47 am - Your standard 'not dead yet' post...

1. Doctor Who has been so very good the last five weeks - back to my Doctor Who, thrills, spills and dodgy science. Woo-hoo!

2. So far this month I have walked/run into a heater (once), a door (twice), and several branches (in one go). Is it too much to ask the universe to make me just slightly less accident prone? Huh, thought it was.

3. World Cup - Round ball game = good. Japan = pwned.

4. Suffering from SGA withdrawal symptoms. Must. Resist. Spoilers. I hate and love [info]sga_newsletter in equal measures.

5. Current reading: Having completely failed on a complete read-through of the Doctor Who NAs (I managed to get through The Pit, only to stall on Deceit, which I quite liked the first time round...) I have somehow got onto Angela Brazil. An omnibus of her early books, that I found second hand. Her later ones (my Mum has some left from her childhood) are okay, but these are hilarious. One girl in the Fifth can manage the difficult feat of swimming backstroke, and the girls happily comment that no girls should be allowed to punt or go walking or whatever alone because girls are so weak and delicate and need big, strong men to protect them. Although I did rather like the one where the girl's 12 year old boy cousin spent the book dressing himself in her clothes and passing himself off as her. I also now own St Winifred's or the World of School by Farrar, who wrote Eric or Little by Little, which is probably the worst book ever written, so I look forward to that.

6. There is NO Item Six. (Sorry, I never can resist this).

7. Insert good resolutions about posting and commenting more, which I will inevitably break. I do, btw, read everyone's posts and I'm still interested in you all, I just kinda, well, suck at commenting.

8. I suppose having a bet on Australia to win the World Cup'd be a bit daft. The pay-off'd be pretty damn high though if everyone else came down with measles they did win though...

Which means, I'm on average not terribly impressed this season. Like an Outpost Gallifrey poster, I suppose that makes me... (Except that they'd be hating both the RTD episodes instead). Oh well, several episodes to go yet; France next week.

ETA: Blimey, everyone else liked School Reunion. Why?!

Oh dear, I think I might eventually have to have kids after all, just so I can read them nursery rhymes.

Naughty Nursery Rhymes )

By the way, anyone who's good at icons like to suggest some text for this Sheppard and McKay one? I feel it needs something, but I can't think of anything. I figured it was about time I had an icon of them since I'm currently SGA obsessed. I have no idea why I am though - it's fun, but nothing like brilliant, and I've worked out why I like Harry Potter/SGA crossovers so much - because the only way the science makes sense is if it's magic...

Huh? They've taken the light? That's it then. I mean, okay, we all knew they had Buckley's, but I still thought they'd fight, 20-20 style. Bugger. Huh, so that's what losing an Ashes series is like. Don't like it. Bloody sign of the Apocalypse, Australia losing a Test series to England, but. Hmph, and SGA was kinda crap this week too. Not that that's a sign of the Apocalypse.

ETA: Yup, and that is it. England have regained the Ashes. Weird. After 18 years - s'long as I can remember - we've had them, in the sense that the MCC has kept them safe from our grubby colonial mitts at Lord's. Good on the Poms. (And that marks the only time I'll call you lot Poms, and probably the last time for the next two years my journal'll be this saturated in cricket) And, eh, at least Buffalo won their first game.

You know those TV shows where a character gets kidnapped and tied up for twenty hours, and says 'I knew you'd come' and is handed gently into the ambulance? It'd be so much better if they said 'where the f---'s the loo' instead, and knocked over the ambulance people in their mad dash to the bathroom.

A Walk in the Karakorum - Fan fiction that starts off being a funny parody of a Victorian childrens' book and ends up being very, very good, and rather touching. Slash, and you don't at all need to have read the book.

BBC 7 Listen Again - Audio programmes. Other BBC radio stations have the listen again facility too, but this has mostly stories. Good for when you're stuck doing a boring task, that has to be done, but doesn't really engage your brain at all. Actually, I pretty much like the whole of the BBC site. From Doctor Who to history games to cricket.

Two: Doc Nine (Dr Who)

Five: Doc Seven (Dr Who)
Six: Ace (Dr Who)

Okay, now that was a goood show. No, I don't mean SGA: Duet. although I'll admit that was highly squeeworthy itself.

But damn that was an exciting test.* Okay, so the ending could have done with a bit of rewriting. ;) Except not really, cos it's way better now for the series. One thing I don't understand though is how Shane Warne can be so intelligent at cricket (well, stepping on his own wicket beside) when otherwise he's so very much, er, not. Also what do women see in him? My normal reaction to him is to start cheering for the other team...

Still on TV, but off cricket, Doctor Who, how much do I love you, let me count the ways... Brilliant, awesome, fantastic - final ep next Saturday, at which point I'll have more to say than incoherent adjectivitis.

*For Americans: Talking cricket, which is sort of like baseball if all the players agreed games should go on for four or five days (or if Australia is playing, three), and with afternoon tea.

*boggles* [info]ithurtsmybrain has 576. Andrew (BtVS)/Satan (Paradise Lost) as one of their pairings.

So, what?:

"Better to reign in the Hellmouth, than serve the Slayer...
So Warren spake, and to him Andrew
Thus Answer'd. Hey, I'd like to serve the Slayer. She's hot.

*Insert a lot of blank verse involving the Trio's discomfiture and defeat wherein Warren is identified as Satan and totally hot evil incarnate*
...
And dragged in chaines down to the depths
Of Hell. Through all his realme, & there
Confounded leave the two. And Andrew spake
To Jonathan, of Satan, the destroyer, thus.
He promised we'd rule together, but he lied,
Satan never really loved, hangingoutwithus."

Or, well, not, as the case may be. *is thoroughly and righteously smote by Milton (possibly for comma abuse)*

Again (attacks) - and maybe not so bad this time - but something has to be done about all these extremists. None of you were there, yeah?

And what is up with all this fundamentalism lately (of both the Christian and Muslim variety)? So many people seem to be going more and more polarised in their views. Which isn't to say everyone is - the Australian Muslim community does want the Mullahs who preach terrorism banned from entering the country. Although that of course is banning free speech. Confused is all that leaves me. I don't know what to think. What do we do? ETA: That actually sounds, in retrospect, as though I meant people's lives are less important than free speech, which wasn't what I meant. What I do think is that those who attack us to create a climate of fear want a world where speech is not free etc, and that to curtail our rights (and responsibilites) in response to their actions is to let them win. But as people on both sides become more prepared to use violence or intimidation or hatred to get what they want (and I realise that this isn't exactly unique to our time; it's just a new arena for this particular conflict) then the scarier the world gets. And frankly I don't have a clue how we can keep it from getting more bloody. We can't even reign in the conservative christians, let alone a culture that has grown up that allows English teenagers to be taken to Pakistan and indoctrinated in how Allah wants them to kill Westerners.

Things to do:
1) Sleep.
2) Get to the point where I can write a things-to-do list without sleep being the number one entry.
3) Check mail
4) Stop dreading checking business mail.
5) Give up on writing Andrew/Warren Thanksgiving fic given that I'm probably the only person that finds the thought of Andrew believing that Jonathan can't celebrate Thanksgiving because he's Jewish funny.
6) Glare at above sentence.
7) Read book on how to use commas correctly.
8) Realise that, for the first time since I started watching Monty Python, I've actually created a list without the sentence: "There is NO Rule/Item Six." Cheer. Think about it. Oh well.
9) Stop wasting time creating stupid, pointless things-to-do list.
10) No
11) Realise I could be here a while. Make popcorn.
12) Actually that's quite a good idea. I made the Christmas puddings a couple of days ago; it takes an awfully long time, besides being excessively boring. I think popcorn might be easier. Turkey w/ the trimmings (My Gran cooks that), popcorn & Christmas cake (My Gran makes that too) would make a much better Christmas dinner, I think. Incidentally, how much brandy should you pour on Christmas puddings, so they do that cool, blue, flamey effect, without actually going up in smoke?
13) Make Christmas card post soon.
14) Do overseas online shopping for Christmas very soon.
15) Weep.
16) Bah, humbug.
17) Stop posting, and do something.
18) Yes.
23rd-Nov-2004 04:07 am - Five Characters Meme
Avon
I haven't had any real spare time for surfing lj-wise lately, but one meme I did see (I think gacked from [info]jenoofer?), rather intrigued me, or at least I've been thinking about it on and off for a week, in odd (very odd) spare moments. That was the one where, iirc, you take five characters that fascinate you most, from any medium, and discuss them. Mostly it seems to be plot I come back for, but five characters over my whole life, should be able to do that...

Let's hope they're not all immature murderers... )

Also, having analysed various characters to death, in spare time I don't have, I have one other thing I should say: er, housekeeping thing. I don't have much time lately, so I've trimmed my friendslist a bit - I want to try to comment a bit more (admittedly some of my lousy commenting habits are due to lack of confidence, but time is a factor), and I don't really even have time to read it all at the moment, so I've cut a fair bit: hopefully only people with whom I've had a mutual diverging of interests, and thus won't care, or people who haven't got me friended anyway, who will care even less... Basically, though, this would be a good time to defriend me if you've been thinking you'd like to, but didn't want to hurt my feelings. I don't necessarily want anyone to, but yeah, it's the best time.

So, over and out - and don't watch the Gunpowder, Treason and Plot, Robert Carlyle mini-series - it is bad, bad, bad!

I think I've slept basically 16 hours in the 24 for the last several days, I've never had jet-lag like that before. I could barely stay awake long enough to work yesterday and Monday. I did wake up for just long enough on Saturday to send my ballot for the US election, so I can't be blamed if Bush wins. Pah. Hope he doesn't. Go Ohio. Get your maths right and put Kerry in, damn you. Never quite figured out why people vote for Bush. Is it just that the terminally stupid 51% of the population are glad to have found a President that truly represents them?

Oh well, I don't think I want to think about the election, bad enough that we voted Howard in (Why, Australia? Why?). If I can stop thinking about bad results in elections (but good result in cricket, btw! Yes!), I can write up the next part of my trip, which is a rather less topical now, but more palatable than conservative victories in elections...

27th-Oct-2004 06:47 pm - Back in London
Avon
Last day in London here, then back to Aust. I have 12 mins left of my Internet connection, and given the horrible hour the plane leaves in the morning, an early night seems kind of called for (we did the final night thing last night, so I'm knackered!). Btw, Britain needs more Internet access stations - I've been suffering from severe withdrawal symptoms! I can't believe it's nearly over - on the other hand it will (after I catch up on sleep...) give me sufficient time to write up about the trip, and catch up (er, well maybe not completely, y'all write too much!) on lj.

I did manage to send the postcards off - although I have a nasty suspicion I confused Loch Ness and Loch Lomond on one - Er, the Loch Ness Monster was on holiday, okay! So signing off for now, till later...

Well, I may actually have some time to update. We're going to the zoo next. Er, not my idea... My choices were much more mature - I mean London Dungeons - height of sophistication, ya know. Have photo with my head being chopped off by M. Very good photo. And it still has the live rats - which are one of the few things I remember from my last trip to England. I may have been a slightly gruesome kid... er, I may still be. We're going on the Jack the Ripper tour tonight. We also went to the Tower - more torture!

We went to 'The Abridged History of America' last night. It was jolly funny, and lots of anti-Bush jokes snuck in. Although an audience member managed the best - in answer to the question "How many US presidents have been assassinated?:" "One too few." Very bad taste I know, but funny. It was by the Reduced Shakespeare Company - I went to The Complete Shakespeare one as a school outing before. I'm trying to persuade M to come to Stratford on Avon for a day trip, so we can see something there.

This is getting a bit long, so cutting... )

Anyway, that'll do for now: except skimming through flist, see I've missed at least one b'day. (Hope it's not more...) But:

If work keeps on being this busy, I'm going to have a nervous break-down. Eh, but five weeks today until we go to England, so w00t.

On the fandom front, I think I'm the only person in HP fandom (alright: fandom fringes in my case) who isn't mad keen on [info]shoebox_project. Don't worry if you love it, I'm probably just missing something, and I'm not going to moan about why. Instead I'm gonna rec something in the same format (but it started first!) that's a damn sight better: Season of Mists by McKay. Episodes 1-65 and Episodes 65 onwards Currently up to Ep 78 and still going strong. Reading wise I'm not up to date (3 eps behind - I haven't had time for anything lately), but will as soon as I can. I'm actually working atm (yes it is after 1am. *sigh*). For those who need pairings and that, it's post-OotP, with Remus/Charlie; Remus/Bill; Percy/Tonks as the main pairings. Well, they're my main pairings in it. ;) *waves Bill/Remus/Charlie flag*

Wherein I'm going to talk about the word 'gotten' and subsequently the possibility of anti-Americanism, so skip if that sort of thing isn't quite your idea of a good time )

And here endeth the rant, and I've still got all that work to do before I sleep. Heigh-ho, better get on with it. *g* Unless anyone wants to distract me by arguing with me? Although I promise my main defence for illogic will be that it's late, and I'm tired! ;)

Yeahah! Great time to be an Australian. We're nearly top of the medals. Yes Thorpie! And the US made idiots of themselves in basketball - and are much lower in the tallies than us. Ha!

Sides, way I reckon it - we were 10th in Barcelona; 7th in Atlanta and 4th in Sydney, we have to be first in this games. It makes perfect sense. ;)

If I could just get over the whole it being the 28th Olympiad, but only the 25th Olympics, I'd be happy. I spose it's cos that's just a four year period regardless of whether the Olympics takes place, but it's still weird. Huh.

Anyway, go, Aussie, go!!

Avon
So, so tired, I really have to not go out drinking on the weekends - I don't get hangovers terribly often, but for some reason it makes me only able to sleep about three hours of the night morning. And to have to spend the day rereading Stalky & Co. Well, and Georgette Heyer, but that’s largely irrelevant to this journal, not being a fandomy thing.

Anyway, Stalky & Co - so very much James, Sirius & Remus. Not that any of them are exact equivalents of the characters, (in any case I don’t much like them, especially not the counter bullying thing – but then James & Co were pretty obnoxious, and I could totally see them doing the counter bullying too, if they caught a couple of the Slytherins), but it’s a fairly similar situation, prior to ‘The Prank’ (not that I call using your second best friend to murder someone a prank). They’re both the mishief makers of the school – but both groups (ie with Snape) are inclined to claim the moral high ground. Also both groups are at a school where the situation is that they’re liable to join up afterwards and to have to fight, and possibly die for their country/side. I’m not actually going anywhere with this, it just struck me as vaguely interesting. Although McGonagall is most certainly not Popularity Prout. If I ever write Marauder era fanfic, the Slytherin head of house will be called King though. Snape’s obviously modelled himself on him.

Eh well, bed time I think.
